Achieving through quality

Environment & sustainability

As one of the UK's leading waste management and recycling companies, we understand the need to develop a sustainable economy in the UK. We see the huge amount of waste materials which are generated by society and recycle them to preserve their value in our economy. Recycling reduces the need for the expensive extraction of increasingly limited raw materials from the earth, conserving the natural resources on which all businesses and people ultimately depend.

Sustainable development is about creating a society in which we can live within the limits of the planets resources. Recycling is an essential industry in any developed society as it prevents valuable resources being lost and provides affordable sustainable materials for reuse within the economy. However, for the industry to contribute to the development of a sustainable economy, we must be as environmentally friendly as possible. This means increasing energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding pollution. It also means developing new technology to recover the greatest possible value from waste streams.

To ensure the Leo Group is helping the UK drive towards a more sustainable economy we have environmental policies in place to guide our actions and business decisions, from strategic to operational level. Our company policies can be downloaded by clicking on the links below:

We have Environmental Management Systems in place for all our businesses which help us manage and reduce negative environmental impacts whilst recognising the positive impacts. Our category 1 rendering plant in Bradford has become the first of our sites to gain the international standard ISO 14001 for environmental management. The certificate was awarded in August 2013. This achievement has been closely followed by the rendering plant at Penrith in November 2013.

Our site at Halifax has been awarded the Silver Business Pledge Award from Calderdale Council for its environmental management system and for our ambitious CO2 reduction plan for the site. In line with the national aim, Calderdale is aiming to reduce its emissions of CO2 by 40% by 2020. We enjoy membership of Calderdale Councils’ Carbon Club, where we can share expertise and ideas for carbon reduction plans with other local businesses to help meet the districts emissions targets and produce a sustainable local economy fit for the future.
