Achieving through quality

Renewable energy

As one of the UK’s leading environmental companies, Leo Group is committed to renewable energy and sustainable business practices. Our state-of-the-art rendering plants produce poultry and tallow oil used in the biodiesel industry, as well as meal to generate power and fuel cement works.

Tallow has come a long way since the days of soap and candle making. All the oil produced at our rendering plants is certified as a sustainable biofuel which enables it to be used as a sustainable ingredient in biodiesel. All the oil produced at our rendering plants is now certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme.

There has been a push in recent years from the EU to increase the use of biofuels in our energy mix in order to reduce our reliance on traditional fossil fuels with their associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, not all biofuels are sustainable. Unsustainable biofuels can cause significant environmental damage, the most obvious example being the clearance of virgin rainforest to grow oil plants such as palm oil.  The ISCC seal is used by industry to distinguish between truly sustainable and unsustainable biomass fuels.

In judging sustainability the ISCC audit and certification process looks at GHG emissions, sustainable land use, protection of natural habitat and social sustainability. The ISCC certification also guarantees compliance with the requirements of the EC Renewable Energy Directive (RED).

In addition, we have exciting new projects in the pipeline for generating other sources of sustainable energy, including anaerobic digestion and a biomass power plant. We have also invested in a wind turbine at our Bradford site to add wind power to our energy mix. Leo Group is investing in these technologies as it is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
