Operations

Leo Group was established as Swalesmoor Mink Farm in 1971 by founders Leo and Margaret Sawrij, when they acquired a 10-acre property on the outskirts of Halifax which has since become home to our Head Office.

Fast forward almost 50 years and under their son, Danny’s leadership, Swalesmoor Farm is a bustling site, home to 235 employees and still with the original farmhouse on the plot. The Group’s central functions of accounts, environmental and technical, health & safety, HR, PR & marketing are based at the facility. With our raw pet food operation, Omega Proteins Halifax; transport division, Haulage Holdings; and Leo Sawrij Ltd which manages our property portfolio, also located at the site.

We have rendering facilities across the UK including Omega Proteins Penrith, Omega Proteins Bradford and Scot Proteins Kintore,  plus an array of fallen stock collection businesses in Scotland, England and Wales, as well as bulking operations and storage facilities.

The past decade has seen the Group evolve further with us investing heavily in our plants to ensure we are amongst the most advanced and efficient in the world. As well as adopting the latest environmentally friendly technologies including thermal oxidisers, biofilters, water effluent treatment plants, wind turbines, solar and biomass.

Leo Group has also diversified its portfolio acquiring international businesses; Biopower in Belgium and BJK Industries in South Africa. As well as bringing our logistics and transport operation in house with the creation of Haulage Holdings, we have further strengthened this area by taking ownership of Mercedes-Benz Bell Truck and Van ensuring we have access to the very best vehicles for our large fleet.

The Group brings this experience to each of its 17 farms nationwide, raising more than 400 herds of pedigree and commercial cattle.

Our breeding objective is to produce cattle demonstrating correctness, top quality conformation, record growth rates as well as a quiet temperament. Over the years, the herd has built a reputation for breeding quality cattle year on year. This is proven by pedigree cattle prizes won whilst at shows and sales, throughout the country.

Omega Proteins Bradford

UK

Omega Proteins Bradford is a category 1 rendering plant. It was the first acquisition of a rendering plant by Leo Group and has been owned and operated by us since 1999.

The site, which is in Thornton, renders high risk animal by-products collected from farms and abattoirs across England that are unfit for consumption including fallen stock, specified risk material and animals infected with disease.

The rendering process converts animal by-products into protein meals and purified fats. The material is cooked to remove moisture then pressed to separate the fat content from the protein meal. The products created from the Category 1 material – meat and bone meal (MBM) and tallow – are then used as a raw material in the bio diesel industry and as an alternative to fossil fuels in industries such as power generation and cement production.

The Haulage Holdings Organisation

UK

Our transport division, The Haulage (Holdings) Organisation Ltd (HH), owns and operates a large modern fleet of specialist vehicles dedicated to serving the needs of Leo Group’s companies.

With operating centres in Kintore (Aberdeenshire), Dumfries, Penrith, Attleborough and Halifax, HH collects from and delivers to Leo Group suppliers and customers throughout the UK.

By utilising the services of the Group’s own dedicated transport operation, we are able to offer a reliable, cost effective, specialist collection and delivery service which ensures both raw materials and finished products remain in the best possible condition.

Omega Proteins Penrith is Leo Group’s only category 3 animal by-products rendering plant and also our largest, most environmentally friendly site.

Category 3 material is classed as low risk and includes parts of animals that have been passed fit for human consumption in a slaughterhouse but are not intended for consumption. The plant produces oils and meals for use predominantly in pet food but also in the biofuel, cosmetics, oleo chemical and power industries.

We have several carbon reduction initiatives on-site including solar panels to provide electricity and heat exchangers which take hot water and air from our factory and use it to heat the radiators in our offices.

Scot Proteins Kintore

UK

Scot Proteins Ltd is Leo Group’s only rendering plant in Scotland. The site in Kintore processes category 1 animal by-products that are unfit for the food chain and fallen stock from farms.

Leo Group acquired the site in 2008 and it was initially used as a bulking operation before material was transported down to our site in Bradford, England. Following a fire at our plant in Bradford we started the process of recommissioning the facility in Kintore, in 2019, in order to maintain our rendering capacity for category 1 material.
